InternationaL/

Language

As a former linguistics major, I have a passion for language.

In elementary school, I was enrolled in a Japanese immersion program (6 years). I then took Latin in middle school (3 years), and the highest level of Spanish in high school (4 years). In college (4 years), I minored and achieved fluency in French.

I also took classes in language acquisition and other linguistic areas of study (syntax, semantics, phonetics, phonology, morphology, etc.).

I studied abroad in Paris in 2015, where outside of my French language and culture studies, I also babysat and taught a five-year-old English as an employee at the Speaking Agency.

In the summer of 2016, I worked at the English Language Center for international students, a residential program that operated out of the student dorms at UCLA. As a substitute teacher, I taught over 23 hours of self-created lesson plans in advanced English grammar and conversation classes for students 10-18 years old. I also lead excursions and activities around Los Angeles in my role as a Residential Counselor there.

I love to connect with people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Thus, I have made it a point to live and work abroad or with internationals several times over the past five years:

Customer service

In 2017, I spent another summer living in Paris, where I worked at a culinary school called l'Atelier des Chefs. All job duties (including answering calls and emails, working the store front, and serving as a waiter) were conducted in French, except for a few large group classes to tourists, which I taught in English, after learning the recipes from my colleagues in French.

Over the summer of 2018, I worked as an au pair in Luxembourg, meaning I was a live-in nanny for two girls (4 and 7 years) and only spoke to them in French.

In 2019 and 2020, as an Admissions Specialist at Growing Generations, I worked with the Director of International Relations to help spearhead a new program with international VIP egg donors. In this position, I was in communication with clinics, modeling agents, and egg donors living in South and Central America, Europe, and Asia.

Since many of the people I worked with did not speak very much English, I sometimes worked with a translator, and sometimes translated forms and emails from/to Spanish and Portuguese myself.
